- Ed attended Columbia University on a football scholarship for two years. He then transferred to University of Oaklahoma to study acting. Next, he moved to California and graduated from California Institute of Arts with a bachelor of fine arts.
- Ed is married to Amy Madigan and the couple have one daughter, Lily.
- Ed's first acting job was in a local theater whle a student at Oklahoma University. The audience gave him a standing ovation for his performance as King Arthur in 'Camelot.'
- His performance in 'The Right Stuff' got him the cover story in Newsweek.
