- Sean's parents are actors John Astin and Patty Duke.
- Actor Mackenzie Astin is Sean's younger brother.
- While recording a documentary segment to add to the DVD release of The Goonies, Sean left the room and never came back.
- Sean's biological father is actually Michael Tell. His mother became pregnant and married Michael for less than a month. John adopted Sean when he was three. He has three brothers from his biological father, David, Allen and Tom.
- Sean is married to Christine Astin. They have one daughter, Alexandra.
- Sean earned an Academy Award nomination for his short film 'Kangaroo Court' in 1995. During this project he met Christine, whom co-produced the film with him and they soon were married.
- Sean graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles with honors. He earned a Bachelors degrees in both history and English.
