Answer to Trivia
War films and the Academy Awards have a long history together. The first Best Picture prize to be handed out in 1929 went to Wings. The William Wellman-directed movie was a silent film about World War I fighter pilots.
Two years later, another war film won film's biggest award. All Quiet on the Western Front took home the Oscar. In the years since, numerous movies using war as a setting have won Best Picture. From Here to Eternity, The Bridge on the River Kwai, Patton, Braveheart, and The Hurt Locker all had war stories to tell.
This year, war film American Sniper was nominated for Best Picture. The Clint Eastwood-directed movie starring Bradley Cooper tells of the true story of Chris Kyle, the deadliest marksman in U.S. military history.
While American Sniper did become the top grossing film of 2014, it lost the Best Picture race to Birdman. American Sniper is now on DVD and Blu-ray so you can watch both films and decide the winner for yourself.
