Officially, it might be called the San Diego International Comic Convention, but to movie studios and TV networks, it might as well be called Judgment Weekend.
The explosion of comic book related movies in the 1990s introduced Hollywood to this untapped resource of hundreds of thousands of fans with their fingers locked on the pulse of what's cool and hip. And to think most people still call it Geek Con or Nerd Week.
But this weekend was chock full of juicy movie news and if you, like us, were unable to attend the convention, we've skimmed the proceedings and offer the following best of show tidbits.
- Edward Norton and crew showed up to talk about The Incredible Hulk. Last week, we revealed the casting news, but the panel also revealed that Norton wrote the script the movie. They also revealed the first picture of the Hulk (on the right), which bears quite the resemblance to Eric Bana's 2003 incarnation.
- Walt Disney announced that they are completing all seven books from the Narnia series. The goal is to bring a new movie out each May beginning with 2008's The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian.
- 300 director Zack Snyder confirmed most of the cast for his next graphic novel adaptation, Watchmen. Billy Crudup (Dr. Manhattan), Patrick Wilson (Nite-Owl), Matthew Goode (Adrian Veidt/Ozymandias), Jackie Earle Haley (Rorschach) and Jeffrey Dean Morgan (The Comedian) are some of those added to the cast. They also showed the first teaser poster for the movie that will hit theaters on March 6, 2009.
- The Joker was up to his usual tricks at the Comic Con in advance of next Summer's The Dark Knight. We told you about the new image of the Joker and teaser trailer.
- We also mentioned that J.J. Abrams was as evasive as he was intriguing when he talked about his upcoming new movie, code-named Cloverfield. The rumors of the movie's actual title ranged from Monstrous to Colossus. Something tells us that this will only get more interesting before January.
- Finally, Paramount did confirm that Abrams' other project, Star Trek would have two Spocks. Leonard Nimoy would return to reprise his iconic role while Heroes star Zachary Quinto will play the younger version of Spock. We also learned that it would come out on Christmas Day 2008.
